Turkish Youth!
Your first duty is to
preserve (save) the Turkish Independence and to protect the Turkish Republic
forever.
This is the only basis
(foundation) for your existence and future. This basis is your most valuable
treasure. In the future, there will be enemies again, both interior and
exterior, who will try to deprive you of this treasure. If someday you have to
defend your Independence and the Republic, in order to perform your duty, you
must not think of the possibilities and conditions of the circumstances you
will be in. These possibilities and conditions may arise (start) in an
unfavorable manner. The enemies with ill-intent (evil-intent) toward your
Independence and the Republic may be the representatives of an unprecedented
(exceptional) victory.
Through force and deceit,
all the fortresses of the beloved country may have been taken over, all the
shipyards may have been seized, all of her armies may have been disbanded
(broken up), and every corner of the country may have been fully occupied. On
top of that, more grave and tragic, within the country, those in power may be
inattentive, corrupt, and even in treason. Even these people having power may
unite (join) their personal interests with the invaders' political aspirations
(ambitions). The people may have been exhausted and crushed in poverty.
Turkish youth of the
Future! Even under these circumstances and conditions, your duty is to save
Turkish Independence and the Republic. The power you need is in the noble blood
that flows in your veins.

ATATÜRK’ÜN TÜRK
GENÇLİĞİNE HİTABESİ
Ey Türk Gençliği!
Birinci vazifen Türk
İstiklâlini (bağımsızlığını), Türk Cumhuriyetini ilelebet (sonsuza dek)
muhafaza ve müdafaa etmektir (savunmaktır).
Mevcudiyetinin ve
istikbâlinin (geleceğinin) yegâne temeli budur. Bu temel senin en kıymetli
hazinendir.
mevcuttur.
SKIN DIVING
Those who are interested
in skin diving (scuba diving) sometimes ask each other whether (it) skin diving
is dangerous. This, of course, depends on the skin diver, because most of the
danger results not from diving but from the diver.
In skin diving the diver
is usually equipped with a glass and rubber face mask to keep the water from
blurring his vision. Rubber foot flippers give him speed and endurance. He
wears a diving suit (wet suit) which keeps him warm when the water is cold.
Most face masks have
short breathing tubes called snorkels. The diver breathes through this tube. If
he wants to go deeper, he takes a deep breath and plunges. Skin diving is
usually done in water 2 to 7 meters deep. Expert divers with training and
experience, however, can go much deeper.
Key Words and Expressions
:
1. to depend on : -a bağlı olmak
2. to be equipped with : ... ile
donatılmış olmak
3. rubber face mask : lastik yüz
maskesi
4. to keep ... from : ... den korumak
5. to blur : bulandırmak
6. vision : görme, görüş
7. flipper : palet
8. endurance : katlanma, tahammül
9. breathing tube : solunum borusu
10. snorkel: şnorkel
11. to take a deep breath : derin bir
nefes almak
12. to plunge : dalmak
Aletli
dalış genellikle 2-7 metre derinlikte yapılır. Bununla birlikte eğitimli ve
deneyimli usta dalıcılar daha çok derine inebilirler.
BREAKING THE SOUND
BARRIER
All planes cause pressure
waves in the air as they fly through it. These waves travel at the speed of
sound. The pressure wave is produced by the buildup of particles of air as the
plane goes forward. A jet plane flying at or above the speed of sound about 760
miles per hour, piles up (accumulates) shock waves ahead of it like snow before
a snowplow. Consequently (as a result), the plane carries with it a kind of
wall of compressed air called the sound barrier.
When a plane passes a
sound barrier, it produces a loud sound like an explosion called the sonic
boom. When a plane flies at the speed of sound, its speed is said to be Mach 1,
and a plane flying at twice the speed of sound is flying at a speed of Mach 2.
Key Words and Expressions
:
1.barrier : engel, mania
2.sound barrier : ses
duvarı
3.pressure wave : basınç
dalgası
4.buildup : toplanma,
kümelenme, artma
5.to pile up : yığmak,
toplamak, biriktirmek
6.snowplow: kar temizleme
makinası
7.consequently : bunun
sonucu olarak
8.sonic boom : ses
patlaması
SES DUVARINI AŞMA
Havada uçarken, bütün uçaklar
hava içinde basınç dalgaları meydana getirirler. Bu dalgalar ses süratinde
hareket ederler.
ARCHIMEDES
Archimedes was born in
Syracuse, Sicily in 287 B.C. where he lived most of his life. He was a
brilliant mathematician and developed the science of geometry to a high degree.
He was also the first scientist to recognize and use the power of the lever.
"This man is to be believed in everything he may say." King Hiero of
Sicily made this pronouncement (an announcement) about Archimedes after this
great mathematician-engineer had devised (planned) a machine that could move a
ship by the exertion of one man alone. He is said to have boasted to King Hiero,
"Give me a place to stand and to rest my lever on, and I can move the
earth."
Archimedes also invented
the water-screw, a wooden trough into which water was led, then carried forward
by a rotating screw.
When the Romans attacked
Syracuse, Archimedes invented war weapons to use against them. After a two-year
siege, the Romans finally entered the city, and Archimedes was killed in the
battle that followed. The Romans allegedly found him studying geometric figures
drawn in the sand. When he was about to be killed, he said, "Don't disturb
my circles."

söyleyebileceği her şeye inanılmalıdır."
ANIMALS OF THE WATERLESS
DESERTS
The main (principle)
problem of desert animals is how to survive in a world where fresh water is
very rare. All animals need water, but many animals never actually drink water.
One might suppose that the animals of the desert are desperate (hopeless) for
water, and weak for lack of it. On the contrary, the creatures of the desert
are as healthy and contented (satisfied) as animals anywhere else.
Though (in spite of the
fact that) water is the basis of life (foundation of life), many creatures of
the desert pass (spend) their entire (whole) lives without drinking a single
drop. They manage to get all the moisture they require from the food they eat.
In deserts, we find no moist-skinned animals.
Some scientists claim
that giraffes can live without drinking water much longer than camels, which
cannot go for more than seven days without water. Camels certainly do not store
water in their humps as some people appear to believe.

:
1. to survive : yaşamını
sürdürmek, hayatta kalmak
2. fresh water : tatlı su
3. to be desperate for :
... için umutsuz olmak

8. moist-skinned : ıslak,
nemli derili
ELECTRICITY
Electricity is one of the
greatest aids (helps) to modern living. It is invisible. We can only feel, see,
hear, or measure its effects. Scientists call one kind of charge (load)
positive, and the other kind negative. Like (similar) charges repel (reject)
each other, and unlike charges attract (draw) each other. This is also the same
in magnets: Like poles repel and, unlike poles attract.
It is possible to produce
(create) an electric current through chemical action. Also necessary to make
electric current is a pathway, or circuit of some conductor such as copper wire
through which electrons will flow.
To supply a big city with
enough (sufficient) electrical energy, generators are used. Generators have
magnets to produce an electric current. Electric power plants usually supply
current which flows first one way, then the other, changing direction 60 times
a second. This is called alternating current (A.C.). When it changes at this
rate, it is called 60-cycle current.
Key Words and Expressions
:
1. invisible : görünmez
2. charge : şarj, yiik
3. unlike : benzemez,
karşıt
4. to attract: çekmek
5. magnet: mıknatıs
6. circuit: devre

... ile donatmak, ikmâl etmek
10. electric power plant:
elektrik santralı
11. alternating current :
alternatif (değişen) akım
ELEKTRÎK
Elektrik, modern yaşam
için en büyük yardımcılardan biridir. Elektrik görülmez. Biz sadece onun
etkilerini hissedebilir, görebilir, işitebilir ya da ölçebiliriz. Bilim
TRADE
The end purpose of trade
is to get goods into the hands of the consumer. Before there was money, people
used a form of trade, called barter.
Trade goes on among
countries as well as among individuals, because nations too depend on (rely on)
one another for goods and services. Domestic trade is a sale from one person to
another in the same country. The trade of each individual nation with others is
its foreign trade.
Besides (in addition to)
goods, there are some less noticeable but important exports called invisible
items of international trade. Some of these are payment of freight, payment for
insurance, bankers' commissions and tourists' expenditures.
One country's money is
not usually good in another; therefore, it is necessary to have a system for
exchanging the currency of the buyer into that of the seller. Bankers handle
(manage) this by doing what is called 'buying and selling foreign exchange.'
Key Words and Expressions
:
1. consumer : tüketici
2. barter : takas
3. one another : bir
diğerini (çok kişi arasında)
4. goods and services :

12. currency : döviz
13. that of: konuda 'the currency
of yerini tutuyor.
MERMAIDS
For many centuries
stories of mermaids have been told by sailors. The seamen described them as
sirens (bewitching or captivating women) of the sea whose purpose was to lure
(attract) sailors to their destruction onto the rocks by their singing. It is
thought that the dugong is the animal which may have been responsible for these
stories.
Dugongs live in the
tropical waters of the Indian Ocean and on the northern coast of Australia.
They are very gentle creatures and eat only plants. They grow to a length of
about three meters.
Dugongs feed their babies
from teats which are high up on the female's body. When feeding, the mother
holds the young above the water so that it is able to suck. At a distance, the
sight of a dugong nursing its young might look very much like a human mother
feeding her baby. For this reason, this animal is said to have given rise to
the stories of mermaids.

1. mermaid : deniz kızı
2. siren : mitolojide
şarkı söyleyerek denizcileri kayalıklara çeken yaratık.

DENİZ KIZLARI
Yüzyıllardır denizciler
tarafından, deniz kızlarının hikâyeleri söylenir. Denizciler onları, maksatları
şarkılarıyla denizcileri kayalıklara çekip mahvetmek olan deniz yaratıkları
olarak tanımlamışlardı. Bu hikâyelerin sorumlusunun dugong olmuş olabileceği
zannedilmektedir.
Dugong'lar Hint
Okyanusunun tropikal suları ve Avusturalya'nın kuzey kıyısında yaşarlar. Onlar
anne, emebilsin diye, yavruyu suyun üzerinde tutar. Uzaktan, yavrusunu emziren
FORESTS
Among the most important
natural resources of Türkiye are its forests. From the forest come fruits,
nuts, wood for houses, furniture, fuel, paper and countless other products.
Actually the list is almost endless. Forests reduce the dangers of flood by
soaking up rain and snow like a blotter. The floor of a forest is moist and
spongy.
One of the most important
things we can do for the future of our country is to see that our forests are
properly cared for. The care of forests is called forestry. It has been
practiced in some European countries for hundreds of years. More than 400 years
ago, England began to issue laws about the cutting down of forests.
In Türkiye, unfortunately
a great many of our forests have been destroyed (make useless) by human
carelessness. It is said that it was once possible to ride across the country
under a continuous green canopy of trees. Fire has also been responsible for
the devastation (ruin) of great tracts of forest land.

ORMANLAR
Türkiye'nin ormanları, en
önemli doğal kaynakları arasındadır. Ormandan meyveler, fındıklar, evler için
tahta, mobilya, yakıt, kâğıt ve sayısız diğer ürünler çıkar. Aslında liste
neredeyse sonsuzdur.
AN UNUSUAL WEAPON
All living creatures are
provided with some means of defending themselves. The torpedo fish has a very
unusual weapon. This creature can build up electricity inside itself to an
amazing extent. It cun turn on a powerful electric current at will. Many
swimmers and ocean fishermen have received paralyzing shocks from these living
electric batteries. The torpedo fish uses its shock apparatus to stun and kill
the smaller animals it eats as well as to defend itself.
On each (every) side of
the torpedo fish's circular body near the head is a system of electric storage
cells. These cells consist of (are composed of) a group of prism-shaped
compartments of muscular fiber, running perpendicularly through the body of the
fish. The upper side of the creature is the positive pole of the battery, and
the lower side is the negative pole. When the animal is sick or dying, its
electric powers gradually (little by little) disappear.

means : gereç, araç
to turn on : değişmek,
çevrilmek
at will : isteğe bağlı

HOUSEWIVES AND EXERCISE
Most of us who regularly
walk, run, swim, cycle and so on are actually preserving (maintaining) our
health and prolonging (extending) our lives.
But because of the nature
(type or kind) of housework, a housewife is generally deficient (incomplete) of
true exercise. Some housewives, however, may think that they are the perfect
examples of the persons who get all the exercise they need. Actually, the
housewife confuses the amount of activity with the type of activity. She fails
to distinguish between just plain activity (housework) and the systematic
manipulation of the body that is true exercise.
Housework is not fun, but
it is the work of the housewife, and the duties of the housewife bring into
being (promote) conditions of physical and emotional stress. When her physical
and pyschological conditions are healthy, she takes pleasure and finds meaning
in her work, and this in turn, is passed onto other members of the household
(family). Therefore, it is essential for the housewife to take the time to
relieve this stress through proper exercise.
The proper physical
exercises can be, and should be practiced at any convenient (handy) time of the
day. However, it is good practice to choose the same time each day, if
possible, because then the idea becomes a habit. While doing the housework, a
housewife should often stretch in order to remove (take off) tension.

THE WORLD’S GREAT
RELIGIONS AND ISLAM
Man is a religious being.
His religion has taken endless forms. His names for gods and goddesses are
numerous beyond counting. To be sure, all religions of today have roots in the
past.
While (although) there
are many religions in our present world, by far the most influential in the
extent of their followings are the six : Hinduism, Buddhism, the Philosophies
of the Chinese, Islam, Judaism and Christianity.
With no altars or images,
no organized priesthood or sacraments, Islam is a noble yet simple (plain)
religion based on five precepts (pillars) or principal acts of faith. The five
precepts of Islam are as follows : 1. The Confession of Faith 2. Prayer, five
times a day 3. Almsgiving 4. Keeping the fast of Ramadan 5. Pilgrimage to
Mecca.
Just as the prophet of
Christianity is Jesus Christ, Mohammed is the prophet of the Moslem religion. A
believer in Islam is called 'mümin' meaning a believer of Islam. The creed of
Islam is; 'There is no God but Allah, and Mohammed is his prophet.'

Kelime-i Şehadet, 2. Günde beş kez
ibadet, 3. Zekât verme, 4. Ramazan orucunu tutma, 5. Mekke'yi haccetme.
Tıpkı Hıristiyanlığın
peygamberi Hazreti İsa olduğu gibi, Hz. Muhammed de İslâm dininin
peygamberidir. İslâmlıkta bir inanç sahibine, İslâma inanan anlamına gelen,
'mümin' denir. İslâmiyetin inancı şöyledir : 'Allah'tan başka Tanrı yoktur ve
Muhammed onun peygamberidir (elçisidir).’
THE FUTURE OF THE EARTH
The earth is still young.
It should last (continue) as long as our sun. Our sun should (is supposed to)
last for billions of years unless some unlikely catastrophe (disaster) takes
place (occurs) such as a collision with another star. Perhaps 3 to 10 billion
years from now its hydrogen will run low (become less). Through long ages the
sun may swell, slowly at first, then more rapidly. Fifteen billion years from
now it may be, like some stars we know, a red giant, many times its present
size.
As the surface of the
expanding sun nears (approaches) the earth, all living things here will shrivel
(wither). The oceans will boil away and the heated atmosphere will be driven
off into space. Red light will bathe the lifeless dry planet as it turns
through countless centuries about (around) the swelling sun.
Perhaps the earth will be
swallowed up as the sun expands (enlarges). If not, it may blossom into life
again, for the sun will finally shrink (become smaller), astronomers believe,
as it once swelled. But as the sun grows smaller, it will shine ever more
faintly. Eventually 30 to 50 billion years from now its last fires will flicker
out forever (eternally). And an unending night will rule (govern) in what was
once our solar system.
