Translation Passages-III
One of the most beautiful buildings in the world is the Taj
Mahal. The Taj Mahal is a love story, a sad and beautiful one. If it didn't
exist, we could easily imagine that the story of its construction was simply a
fairy tale.
It was built by the Mogul emperor Shah Jehan at Agra, India,
as a tomb for his favorite wife. She was a beautiful and intelligent woman whom
he loved greatly. The building takes its name from one of her titles, Mumtazi
Mahal; its shortened form, Taj Mahal, means "pride of the palace".
This beloved wife of the emperor died in the year 1630. He
was so broken hearted that he even thought of giving up his throne. He decided
to build her the most beautiful tomb that had ever been seen. The building of
the Taj Mahal began the next year. Designs were submitted by leading architects
of the Mogul empire. The best artists and architects were summoned (called)
from Türkiye, India, Persia and Arabia.
It took about 22 thousand men working over a period of 18
years to build the Taj Mahal. It is an eight-sided building made of white
marble, and inlaid with twelve kinds of semi-precious stones as well as with
black marble inscriptions from the Koran. The building stands on a marble
platform. Its minarets, or towers, rise from each of the four corners.
The emperor planned to build an identical (exactly alike)
tomb of black marble for himself on the other side of the river connected by a
silver bridge. But his son imprisoned him in the palace before he could finish.
For the rest of his life, he could only gaze (stare) across the river at the
shrine of his beloved.
When Shah Jehan died, he was buried beside his beloved
empress.

Taç Mahal'in yapımı
Taç Mahal'in inşa edilmesi, 18 yılı aşkın bir zaman çalışan
22 bin kişiye mal oldu. Taç Mahal, Kuran'dan siyah mermer kitabeler yazılı
olarak 12 çeşit yan kıymetli taş kakmalı, sekiz kenarlı beyaz mermerden
yapılmış bir binadır. Bina mermer bir platform üzerinde durmaktadır. Minareleri
WEATHER
Rain is condensed water. Sleet is frozen rain. It forms when
rain passes through a surface layer of cold air. The rain freezes and so
reaches the earth as bits of ice. Sometimes the rain doesn't freeze until it
reaches the ground.
Hail starts out as rain. A rain drop falls toward earth, but
strong currents of air prevent it from reaching the ground. The currents carry
the drop to a high altitude and there it freezes. Then the ice falls through a
cloud where liquid water condenses on the outside of the drop. Another updraft
of air carries the ice to a high altitude again, and there the new layer of
water freezes. This repeating action may continue for a long time, making the
hailstone larger and larger. Strong updrafts of air are needed (required) for
hailstones to form (take shape).
Precipitation is any form of water or ice which falls to the
earth. Snow, sleet and hail are frozen precipitation. Snow is flakes of frozen
water, and a snowflake is a soft crystal of ice. Mist is veiy small particles
of water. Fog forms when air just above (over) the ground is cooled to such a
low temperature that it can no longer hold a large amount of water vapor. A
drizzle is a very light rain. If any form of precipitation is falling to the
earth, we say, "It is raining, misting, sprinkling, snowing, drizzling,
hailing, sleeting, or showering”.

HAVA
UNITED NATIONS
The United Nations is an association of independent nations.
It was set up (established) by the victorious nations of World War II, to
prevent and end war dealing with problems which can best be solved through
international action. On June 26, 1945, the United Nations constitution, known
as The UN Charter, was completed and signed by representatives of 50 nations.
By October 24, 1945, the required number of nations had
confirmed (ratified, approved) the Charter and the United Nations came
officially into existence. October 24 has been celebrated as United Nations day
since 1948.
According to the Charter, the UN has four main (chief)
purposes. The first aim is to maintain (keep) peace by settling disputes in a
peaceful manner (peacefully), or by taking measures (steps) to stop
aggression, and the second is to develop friendly relations among nations
based on the equal rights of people. The third aim is to achieve (accomplish)
international cooperation in solving economic, social, and cultural problems.
And the fourth aim of the United Nations is to serve as a center where the
actions of the nations can be combined in trying to reach (attain) these aims.
The flag adopted for the UN represents (stands for) the
world surrounded by two olive branches, the traditional symbol of peace.

Beyannameye göre, BM'in dört temel amacı vardır. Birinci
CANALS
The artificial channels that connect (join) natural bodies
of water are called canals. Canals are chiefly opened for two reasons. One is
to make a voyage shorter, and the other is to carry goods cheaply and quickly.
Canals are also dug to float away things, and to bring water to dry farm lands.
Some canals provide a swift ( fast) flow of water to produce (make) electricity
at hydroelectric plants while some others carry water from reservoirs to city
water supply systems.
The longest, as well as, the oldest canal still in existence
is the Grand Canal of China. Its construction may have been started as early as
the seventeenth century B.C, and it was finally completed about 1280 A.D. by
Kublai Khan. For centuries the 1000-mile Grand Canal was an important water
way, and it also carried water for irrigation.

KANALLAR
Doğal su kütlelerini birleştiren yapay su geçitlerine
kanallar denir.
WORLD’S ECONOMIC
PROBLEMS
Nations all around the world - rich technological nations
(have countries/ developed countries) as well as poor developing nations (don't
have countries) - are plagued with many similar and serious problems that
threaten their survival.
Almost every nation on earth is now plagued with (bothered
by) a growing demand for, but scarcity of, affordable fuel and affordable food.
Lacking are the resources and money for the expansion of their economies for
the security and well-being of their people.
The shortages of affordable essential commodities of life
are happening despite record incomes, despite record production of
manufactured goods and services and record crops in most nations.
Most oil importing nations scarcely (hardly) offered a
protest when Middle East oil producers were forced to dramatically raise
prices. Economically broad- based technological nations were able to absorb the
first shock of raised prices. Now, many of these powerful nations are seriously
weakened.
It has become evident that a fall in the oil price can be as
dangerous to the international economy as an increase. It is true that more
expensive oil could cause greater suffering in the poorest countries and could
set off a new round of inflation in the richer countries. Many economists and
Western politicians argue that a lower oil price is bound to bring greater
prosperity. But oil moves in jumps that have a profoundly unsettling effect on
all countries.

Which countries are called 'have countries?'
What are lacking?
Despite record incomes, what is happening?
Did the oil importing nations offer any protests?
What are the conditions of the powerful nations today?
What happens when there is a fall in the oil price?

DÜNYANIN EKONOMİK PROBLEMLERİ
Dünyanın her yanındaki ulusların - zengin teknolojik uluslar
Şimdi yeryüzündeki hemen hemen her ulus, ödenebilecek yakıt
etmektedir.
VOLCANOES
A volcano is a vent, or opening, in the earth's crust from
which hot molten rock called lava is ejected (forced out). The heat produces an
immense (vast) pressure of steam and other gases underground. If the outlet is
blocked, the volcano may suddenly erupt with explosive force. The solid
material and the liquid lava which escape from volcanoes accumulate (pile up)
about the vents and build volcanic cones.
Most volcanoes erupt periodically, but some are in a state
of constant, though less violent, activity. Eruptions in which the whole
volcano blows itself to pieces are fortunately rare (uncommon). But Mount
Pelee, in its eruption of 1902, wiped out (destroyed completely) the city of
Saint Pierre killing 40.000 people. As far as we know from records, the
greatest eruption took place (occurred) in 1883 on the volcanic island of
Krakatoa The explosion of Krakatoa in 1883 killed 36.000 people. It has been
estimated that the columns of stones, pumice dust and ashes were sent up into
the air, 20 miles by the violent (physically forceful) explosion. As this
material began to spread out, it created darkness in the middle of the day in
places 150 miles away. Some of the dust was carried completely around the earth
by currents in the upper atmosphere. Probably the most serious damage done by
this tremendous explosion came as a result of the waves it set up in the
oceans. The large waves destroyed whole villages, and caused the death of
36.000 human beings. These waves also travelled great distances and may even
have reached the English Channel, 11000 miles away.
The destruction of the volcanic island of Thera in the
Aegean Sea in 1470 B.C. probably gave rise to the legend of the 'lost
civilization of Atlantis.’

VOLKANLAR
yılındaki tahribatı belki de 'Atlantis'in kaybolan uygarlığı’ efsanesine yol
açmıştır.
